One Thin Dime

Here are photos of the outside of a very unusual dime (unfortunately it's the inside which I want to know about). When you look at the frontside, it looks like someone shot it from the back with a BB gun. When you turn it around you find another bump on the backside, not a dent. The bump on the frontside is in the same place as the bump on the backside, as if a BB pellet was inside the dime. Close inspection reveals the dime was flat when stamped. For example, the lettering had gone right over the bump on the back, and was partly worn off while the dime was in circulation. I notice this was when they started doing the sandwich dimes. Could it be that a pocket of super heated air was trapped between the layers, and expanded as the coin released from the die, before the metal could cool off?  Does anyone know a more plausible explanation?

Also weird is the flattened off "E" on the word "dime".
